Details:

Mrs. Phyllis (Gilbert) Gomes was born in Springs, St. George’s, Grenada, on January 1, 1940. She attended primary school in Springs as a child. At the age of 17, Mrs. Gomes emigrated to Trinidad, where she lived and worked for two years before returning to Grenada. In 1964 Mrs. Gomes emigrated to Brooklyn, New York where she lived until she entered into eternal rest on December 15, 2025, at her home in Brooklyn, surrounded by love.

Mrs. Gomes was a woman of profound faith and a cornerstone of the Church of St. Mark Episcopal, in Brooklyn. She was a devoted member and former branch leader of the St. Mark’s Mothers’ Union branch. This led to her being elected as the Provincial President of the Mothers’ Union, USA Province, from 2007 to 2013 where she served with great distinction.

A trailblazer in the nursing profession, Mrs. Gomes served with excellence at Mount Sinai Hospital in Harlem, NYC for 40 years until her retirement in 2006. She spent a brief portion of her early nursing career in Psychiatric Care. The majority of her nursing career was spent in Maternal Care, where she assisted with countless births and was a preceptor helping many new nurses.

As a long-standing member of GrenCarPet (Grenada, Carriacou, & Petite Martinique) Nurses Association, and CANA (Caribbean American Nurses Association), Mrs. Gomes helped raise funds and escort equipment to Grenada to support medical facilities.

Though she resided in Brooklyn, Mrs. Phyllis remained deeply connected to Grenada. In 1986, she established her home in the Grand Anse community, where she remained a frequent and beloved "snowbird," often seen attending community events, Sunday service at the Anglican church in St. George’s, or taking early AM Zumba classes on Grand Anse Beach.

Mrs. Gomes placed a high value on maintaining deep ties to her roots and community in Grenada, throughout her entire life. She passed the importance of culture to her daughters Sharon and Yael, by ensuring that they took summer vacations to Grenada regularly as a family, with her husband John Gomes.

Mrs. Gomes was an avid traveler, and visited 6 out of 7 continents over the course of about 50 years. Still, Mrs. Gomes never forgot the tiny village and small island that laid her life's foundation. Hers was a life of faith, service, leadership, healing, and adventure. Mrs. Phyllis (Gilbert) Gomes was loved by all who knew her, and will be greatly missed. May her legacy live on, and her memory forever be for a blessing.
